Volunteering at a foundation in Medellín, Colombia, was a journey that transformed my perspective on life and taught me valuable lessons about resilience, love, and the power of education. Each day began with a hour and a half trek in the metro, metrocable and in a bus over a bumpy road, leading me to one of the highest neighborhoods in Medellín. Despite the long journey, the destination made it all worthwhile.
Everyday upon arrival, I was greeted by the stunning views, in a neighborhood with a stark contrast to the bustling city below. The foundation itself was a vibrant place, filled with the laughter and energy of children running around. Their joy was infectious, and their welcoming hugs were the perfect remedy for any fatigue or nausea from the commute.
My role at the foundation involved assisting with recreational activities and teaching reading and writing lessons. Working with young children quickly became my favorite part of the day. Their enthusiasm and curiosity were inspiring, and I found immense satisfaction in helping them learn and grow. The local teacher and various staff members were incredibly supportive, and thanks to their patience and guidance, my Spanish improved significantly over time.
However, the experience was not without its challenges. Witnessing the conditions in which these children lived and hearing their personal stories was often heart-wrenching. The reality of their daily struggles was a sobering reminder of the inequality that exists in the world. Yet, it was precisely these children, with their boundless spirit and unwavering smiles, who made every hardship worth enduring. Their joy and resilience filled my heart with profound emotion and strengthened my resolve to make a difference.
Volunteering at the foundation is an experience I recommend to anyone seeking to broaden their horizons and make a tangible impact. It enriches your world, providing insights into the culture and history of a country, the unique challenges of a neighborhood, and the personal stories of its residents. It also offers the valuable opportunity to learn a new language and contribute positively to a community in need.
Looking back, my time in Medellín was an unforgettable chapter of my life. I hope to return one day to see how the children have grown and to continue contributing to their development. This journey not only shaped me as an individual but also left an indelible mark on my heart, reminding me of the beauty of human connection and the incredible potential we all have to make a difference.
